ABOUT ILENE ENGEL
A native of Jasper, Alabama, Ilene spent decades in the broadcast news industry. Ilene climbed through the ranks as a writer, producer, news manager and ultimately as corporate news director at the Belo Corporation, a major media company which owned television stations and newspapers. Since retired, she has devoted herself to a wide range of communal and philanthropic endeavors.
Ilene is a past president and current board member of the AJC Atlanta-Southeast Regional Office. Ilene serves as Chair of Leadership Development on AJC’s National Executive Council, the organization’s highest governing body. She also serves on AJC’s National Board of Governors, National Planned Giving Committee, and National Policy Committee.
Ilene is a founder and founding chair of the Jewish Women’s Fund of Atlanta. She is also a past board chair of The Atlanta Women’s Foundation and an alumnus of Leadership Atlanta. In addition, Ilene has served on the boards of The Temple, AIPAC, ADL, Institute of Southern Jewish Life, and Genesis Shelter.
After earning her B.S. at the University of Texas, and living in cities from coast to coast, Ilene has called Atlanta her home for twenty-five years. It is her great pleasure to be surrounded by family, friends, pups, and making and enjoying art.
