NATO is an indispensable bulwark of peace, security, and prosperity. From its founding in 1949, through its expansion in the post-Cold War period, and in its confrontation with the challenges of global terrorism and the ominous threats to sovereignty and democracy of recent years, NATO has demonstrated its inestimable strategic value to the United States and its nearly 30 transatlantic allies. The American commitment to NATO hasn’t been, and should never be, a partisan issue. We must continue to send a strong message to the rest of the world that the shared ideals and precepts on which our nations have relied since the end of the Second World War remain the foundation of U.S. foreign policy.
