The world community must not waver in its support of Ukraine in its fight against the brutal and unprovoked invasion by Russia, now in its third year. In his address today to the UN General Assembly, President Volodymyr Zelensky made a compelling case for a just peace. Ukraine deserves nothing less.

Ukraine’s fight is as much a fight for human rights and democratic values as it is against Russia’s aggression and lawless occupation of sovereign territory. Just this week, a UN commission report found new evidence of the mass torture of Ukrainian civilians and members of its military inside Russian prisons. This is unfortunately only part of a continuing pattern of abuse that has also included sexual violence, executions, and kidnapping.

The war in Ukraine has taken a tremendous toll on the nation even as it remains resolute in standing up to Russian aggression. But as President Biden correctly noted in his UN General Assembly remarks yesterday, “We cannot grow weary. We cannot look away.”

Indeed, now is the time for the UN and the international community to ratchet up the pressure on Russia to end its illegal war and ensure Ukraine has the support to repel an invader who seeks to not only dominate Ukraine but destabilize all of Europe.
