AJC mourns the passing of His Eminence Cardinal Francis George and offers comfort and consolation to the leadership and parishioners of the Archdiocese of Chicago, where he served as Archbishop from 1997-2014.
Cardinal George was a friend of AJC and the Jewish community of Chicago who strengthened the ties between Jews and Catholics. He supported the Archdiocese’s many interfaith endeavors and encouraged Catholics to embrace the Church’s Nostra Aetate document, which transformed Catholic-Jewish relations. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of Nostra Aetate’s promulgation.
“Cardinal George embodied the teachings of Nostra Aetate in his passion for interfaith engagement. We will remember and be thankful to Cardinal George for his warmth and his dedication to bridge our communities," said David Inlander, Chair of AJC’s national Interreligious Affairs Commission.
