American Jewish Committee (AJC) welcomes the efforts by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) to hold CUNY accountable for its woefully inadequate efforts to protect Jewish students, faculty, and staff from discrimination, intimidation, and harassment.
Anti-Zionist and antisemitic activity was already a feature at many CUNY institutions before October 7, but it reached a fever pitch following the Hamas terror assault on Israel. The many corrective steps outlined in the agreement between CUNY and OCR illustrate the depth of the hostile environment Jews face across CUNY’s 25 campuses. Now that CUNY has agreed to an action plan to combat antisemitism, AJC will watch to ensure it is implemented.
