AJC, the global Jewish advocacy organization, welcomes the joint announcement by Israel and Nicaragua that the two nations have reestablished diplomatic relations. Nicaragua had severed diplomatic ties with Israel in 2010.

“The decision to restore diplomatic ties reflects recognition that both countries have enjoyed cooperative relations over the years,” said Dina Siegel Vann, Director of AJC’s Belfer Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs. Nicaragua was one of the first countries to recognize Israel after it declared independence in 1948.

“Both governments view very favorably the re-establishment of ties with the aim of advancing joint cooperation for the advancement of both nations and to contribute to the struggle to achieve peace in the world,” read the joint statement issued in Jerusalem and Managua.
