After years of lobbying by the ADL and AJC for the passage of a hate crime bill, the Georgia legislature finally passed a hate crime bill on June 23, 2020. The sentencing for a misdemeanor or felony can be increased if the defendant acted due to a bias because of the victim’s race, color, or other protected category. AJC Atlanta Regional Director, Dov Wilker, argued that this hate crime bill “will enable government and law enforcement to better support our diverse community.”
