About Merle & David
Originally from South Africa, Merle and David met while studying at the University of Cape Town. Together, they owned and ran a group of 11 private hospitals in South Africa. During this time, Merle also ran her own catering company and started a national organization for people suffering from food allergies and food intolerances called FAIS.
They immigrated to the United States 26 years ago and lived in Savannah, GA before moving to Atlanta. Currently, Merle and David manufacture furniture for healthcare and assisted living markets in the U.S together with their children Ula and Michael Zusman.
In addition to their professional achievements, Merle’s and David’s passion is helping Jews around the world. Merle served as a president of a B'nai Brith chapter in Cape Town and David is the past chairman of the Cape Town Federation, past chairman of JDC Latin America and JDC Israel
Merle and David serve on AJC Atlanta’s Executive Board. Merle also serves on the board of AJC's Transatlantic Institute, Africa Institute, and Project Interchange. Their family foundations support numerous charities including AJC, JNF, JDC, Savannah Federation, Atlanta Federation, Cape town Federation, JF&CS and local charities that tackle food insecurity.
Together with JDC and local South African Jewish federations, they have instituted programs in South Africa tackling healthcare, women’s economic empowerment, and agriculture, ensuring the use of Israeli technology, and the expertise that JDC has developed moving the needle in the areas of impact.
In their free time, they enjoy being with their four grandchildren, traveling, sailing, gardening. They have a son, Sasha and daughter, Ula who is a member of AJC Atlanta’s Board of Councilors.
