American Jewish Committee CEO Ted Deutch issued this statement today on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the anniversary of when the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp was liberated in 1945.

As the passage of time claims survivors of the Holocaust every day, it is left to all of us to ensure their memories and those of the six million lost never dim. As we mark the liberation of Auschwitz 78 years ago, we must ensure the embers of hate do not reignite. The new wave of antisemitism across the globe reminds us that Jews are still at risk simply because of who they are.

We need only think of the souls who perished to understand that we can never dismiss antisemitism or the irrational hatred of Jews wherever and whenever it arises. “Never again” is not a slogan. It is a mandate to find a better way forward.
