Politicizing K-12 Classrooms in Massachusetts
Ideology, Prejudice, & the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA)
AJC New England has prepared a comprehensive report that details a year-long series of initiatives, under the auspices of the Massachusetts Teachers Association’s (MTA), that presented K-12 teachers with a one-sided, ideologically guided understanding of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that they were encouraged to bring to their students. The MTA initiative includes efforts to align the vital quest for racial justice with the demonization of Israel and its supporters. In the wake of Hamas’ October 7 massacre of 1,200 Israelis, this agenda is undoubtedly contributing to an increasingly hostile environment for many Jews in K-12 schools and fueling rising antisemitism here in Massachusetts.
The MTA initiative is a betrayal of public trust. Teachers should be teaching students how, not what, to think. The MTA’s efforts to influence K-12 teachers pose a significant concern not only for Jewish students, teachers, and families, but also for all people who believe that public schools should not become political platforms for powerful, ideologically motivated interest groups.
