The Abraham Society was established in 2016 in Los Angeles, California. It is a “people to people” initiative whose broad mission is to foster relationships of trust, understanding and mutual interest among individuals residing in Southern California who are of Jewish, Muslim and Christian backgrounds (whether or not observant) who have historical, cultural and emotional ties to the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. We seek to foster, by example, a basis for greater understanding and engagement among these communities, premised on the conviction that we share broad areas of common interest.

At Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel last week, AJC partnered with the Portuguese Secretary of Tourism, Ana Manuel Mendes Godinho, and the Honorable Maria João Lopes-Cardoso, Consul General of Portugal, to highlight the rich heritage of Portuguese Jewry. The President of the Jewish Community in Lisbon, Gabriel Szary Steinhardt, and Rabbi Natan Peres spoke at length about the history and current status of the Jews of Portugal.

It was a pleasure to host Ambassador Carlos Garcia de Alba, the Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles, for an intimate dinner and discussion as part of ACCESS AJC LA’s Dinner With a Diplomat series. In conjunction with AJC’s Belfer Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs (AJC Latino), we discussed Latino-Jewish relations, Mexico-Israel ties, NAFTA, DACA, the border, and the mutual concerns of the Los Angeles Mexican and Jewish communities.
